Crustacea 1

Astacus astacus
Cardisoma armatum
Procambaris clarckii
Orconectes limosus
Amazon beach crab (Uca mordax)

.......................................................................................................................
Crustaceans in aquaristics up until now belong a bit to the supositious children. There was little attention for them for years. Of course the strong improved means of transport are responsible for the fact that more and more members of this armored people were imported. Very interesting for the specialized fancier However it is not to be recommended to start keeping these animals without having the requisite prior knowledge. The ascription causes there very own problems. You can go deeply into this when you follow both links on the homepage.
On top left: Astacus astacus, the West- European crayfish or crawfish, that seems to have endured the kreeftenpest really good In the mid the well known often beautifully colored Louisiana swam crayfish , Procambarus clarckii.
On the right
at least the imported from Northern-America Orconectes limosus. Immune to the kreeftenpest he seemed to take up the Astacus-biotopes.

On top rihgt:
A little sweet water winking crayfish (ca. 4 cm) out of the Amazon region. ProbablyUca mordax. Surely it belongs to the Uca-rapax-complex, that, with three specimen, has a wide distribution in South America. It are: Uca burgersi, Uca rapax and Uca mordax. The last ones can bear varying salinity, because of that they still occur on places where the salinifying influence of the sea is hardly noticeably. They ought to be determined at the presence or not of brushy hair at the opposite side of the second and third pair of little paws. On my slides this is not practicable because these little paws are hardly to be seen. Also my ascription is based on the data of origin.
Perhaps they are suitable for a "Amazon-terrarium".
On the bottom left
the Cardisoma armatum originating from West-Africa. The animal likes water but definitely needs a bottom too, in which it will be able to dig a dry hole.
